Garden irrigation on the Mornington Peninsula

Peninsula summers can be dry and windy, and sandy coastal soils drain quickly. A well-planned irrigation system helps new lawns and planting establish, and keeps water where plants actually need it.

Irrigation options

Most gardens benefit from a mix of approaches matched to each area.

  • Drip lines for garden beds, hedges and planters
  • Sprinklers or pop-ups for lawn areas
  • Separate zones for sun, shade and different plant types
  • Timers and controllers to water at the right time of day

Best installed with the landscaping

The easiest time to install irrigation is while a garden is being built. Pipes can run under paths and beds before paving, turf and mulch go down, avoiding trenching through finished work later.

If you are planning new planting or turf, it is worth including irrigation in the same conversation.

Watering sensibly

Deep, less frequent watering generally encourages stronger roots than short daily sprays. Grouping plants with similar needs and using drip under mulch reduces evaporation. Check current water restrictions with your water authority and adjust settings with the seasons.
