Materials and coastal conditions
Hardwood, treated pine and composite boards each wear differently. Near the coast, salt air and strong sun can be hard on finishes and fixings, so suitable fasteners, ventilation underneath and regular oiling or cleaning help a deck last.
Rules to check
Raised decks, boundary fences and pool barriers may have council or building requirements. Pools and spas can require council registration, and barriers must meet applicable Victorian safety requirements. Confirm what applies to your property before work begins.
